Happy Christmas! STRIP #7 in UK Stores Tomorrow

STRIP Magazine #7 should be in UK comic stores tomorrow.

Diamond, our UK distributor, who have confirmed receipt of stock, listed the issue as the Xmas/Christmas special - order code
SEP127823 - STRIP MAGAZINE CHRISTMAS 2012 SPECIAL - and confirmed two weeks ago it will be in stores on Wednesday if the stores ordered it.

However, just when we though things were going so well - the issue arriving on time for once! - after a discussion with one comic shop, it seems the email solicitation of the title may have passed some shops by.

Although listed as "sold out" the title is listed on the Forbidden Planet web site, so they seem to be expecting copies: see http://bit.ly/strip-magazine07

Subscription copies of #7 (including a replacement copies of Issue 5/6) were mailed from Bosnia to all subscribers - UK and overseas - on 20th/21st November.

Our former editor John Freeman, who is now Managing Editor at our digital partner ROK Comics, has put together this little video for us demonstrating the digital edition of STRIP Magazine Issue 7.

We thought you should see it too and we hope you like it, although we are disappointed we did not see his cat! We imagine it is a ferocious beast from myth.

Digital Strip #7 on sale now, print edition in shops soon

The digital edition of Strip Magazine #7 for iPad is on sale now from iTunes, and Diamond UK have confirmed the print edition will be on sale in comic shops from Wednesday 19th December.

This edition of the magazine is a Christmas Special that takes a slightly different form to the usual magazine.

We have an exciting new episode of Phil Hester and John McCrea's regular series WARPAINT to kick it off, but you'll find the Magazine is largely devoted to a variety of one off stories.

By way of a hint of things to come next year, we also have a sneak look at several all-new stories including THRACIUS by James Hudnall and Mark Vigouroux; DENIZENS (by Miko Horvatic and Maxim Simic), which we think is set to prove another hit with our readers; DAN BARTON OF SPACE COMMAND (by John Freeman and Andrew Chiu), an affectionate comedy homage to space heroes; and CORWIN BLAYS, a festive tale starring a hapless thief!

The digital edition also features some exclusive extras, such as a quirky festive tune, and added 'data cards' with background information on the characters and some creators, along with a video trailer for David Lloyd's digital project, Aces Weekly.

We hope you enjoy this special Christmas gift, which also includes a bonus taster of the ROK Comics titles HOUDINI and THE BEATLES STORY - only in this digital edition!

STRIP Magazine #5/6 in UK stores this week

After several unforseen and unwelcome delays due to shipping issues, Strip Magazine Issue 5/6 - a giant-size double issue of Print Media's action anthology - will be in stores tomorrow (Wednesday 31st October 2012).

Priced at £4.99, the 96-page special features a cover by John Ridgway and is another comic shop-only issue and wraps the first Black Ops Extreme story arc by John Freeman and PJ Holden and concludes James Hudnall and John Ridgway's Age of Heroes fantasy adventure - for now.

This special giant size edition has even more comic strip action and adventure than ever, with almost a dirty dozen pages of Black Ops Extreme as the the do-or-die military team try to end an embassy siege in London - and confront a ghost from their past.

Also in the issue, the battle for the future of Earth hits the streets of Houston in Warpaint (by Phil Hester and John McCrea); the gripping conclusion to the first Devil's Heritage adventure (by Jerome Felix and Paul Gastine), as dangerous Nazis hunt a diabolic treasure; elven magic in Age of Heroes; and not one, but two STRIP CHALLENGE winning stories, one by Stephen Baskerville and the other by Paul Rainey and Robert Wells; and two episodes of classic Action comic strip Hook Jaw.

Features this issue are interviews with creators Leo (Mirabilis) Hartas and Nick (Hugo Tate) Abadzis.

• Please note that due to the delayed release of this issue, features and information on the future plans of the title printed in the issue are completely at odds with the current aim of a 2013 news stand launch for Volume 2.

• The print edition of STRIP #5/6 was split into two digital editions for iPad, which include a small amount of digital extra material, some of which will be featured in future print issues

STRIP #7 for Christmas!

After innumerable delays STRIP #5/6 is finally on its way to the shops and to subscribers.

“It’s a case of if anything could go wrong, it did,” explained Mike Conroy, head of Print Media Productions UK operation. “I’m not going to attempt to justify the title’s lengthy absence but I would like to apologise to readers – especially to subscribers – for the inexcusable delays, which they have accepted with great equanimity.”

As for the future, STRIP #7, with a cover by Croatian artist Maxim, will be an 84-page issue carrying a £4.99 cover price.

The Christmas special includes a classic Dredger episode from the controversial 1970s British comic, Action.

PMP is then putting STRIP on deliberate hiatus but only until February, when the comics anthology is to be relaunched as a newsstand title.

“We will be using this time to continue to resolve many of the problems we have encountered. One of our top priorities will be secure a UK shipping company which will be able to deliver STRIP efficiently and on time,” stated STRIP publisher Ivo Milicevic. “You wouldn’t believe what sort of problems we have had with carriers… one entire print run is still wandering somewhere in Italy while our latest shipment only got through on the second attempt… no one knows where or how the original vanished!

“I am amazed and grateful just how supportive our audience has been. I can promise that the relaunched STRIP – The Comic Magazine will bring more really great art and stories to he newsstands. It will be worth to wait,” he proclaimed.

STRIP #7 is currently in production and set to hit shops in the first week of December.

STRIP #6 Digital Edition now on sale on iTunes, print #5 reaches UK

The digital STRIP #6 is now on sale for iPad on the iTunes store, comprising some strips from the print edition of STRIP #5 and some bonus digital only extras, for just £1.99.

And there's some good news, at last, for our print readers – Issue 5 is, finally, in the UK, after a very long wait and several woefully incorrect updates from Print Media Bosnia's previous couriers.

While at this point our new couriers are waiting for the print magazine to clear UK Customs, we're hoping this will be sometime this week and we hope readers will soon enjoy seeing the issue.

Earlier this year, unaware of the problems that would befoul our print magazine, we decided to split the content of the giant-size STRIP #5 roughly in half in order to produce two special digital editions. STRIP Issue 6, published in partnership with ROK Comics, is the second of these, and includes some bonus items that include special promotional pages for a number of British comic creator-owned projects such as RollerGrrls by Gary Erskine.

• In BLACK OPS EXTREME (by John Freeman and PJ Holden) the the do-or-die military team face off with a dangerous terrorist in the middle of an embassy siege!

• Reluctant hero Constant finds himself betrayed in THE DEVIL'S HERITAGE (by Jerome Felix and Paul Gastine)!

• Will an elven warrior find the help she needs in her quest in AGE OF HEROES (James Hudnall and John Ridgway)?

• Meet DAN BARTON OF SPACE COMMAND: space pilot without a clue (by John Freeman and Andrew Chiu)

• Read our latest STRIP Challenge – BODY POP by Paul Rainey and Robert Wells

All this plus interviews with comic creators Leo Hartas (artist and co-creator of the stunning "Mirabilis: Year of Wonders") and writer and publisher Jim Alexander (plus some pages from his comic, "Amongst the Stars", drawn by Mike Perkins); a taster for Tim Perkins glorious space fantasy story, "Worlds End"; and more crazy antics from BOGEY-MAN BOB!

All this plus a special taster of two comics from our digital partner, ROK Comics - Team M.OB.I.L.E. and Houdini!

We'd also like to use some pages to promote new British comics and projects. If British and Irish comic creators would like to have a plug for their own indpendently created titles in that digital-only issue, direct us via infoATprintmediaproductions.com to a 1536 x 1920 image we'll consider for inclusion. On your left is an example of the kind of image we're looking for.

We'll also consider running strip samples but they must be action adventure, SF, fantasy or one page humour - no horror or adult comics, no swearing and no excessive violence. (No, I don't know how Hook Jaw gets away with it, either).

STRIP Magazine price drop for digital edition

The digital edition of STRIP Issue 5
will include alternate content to
the print edition
STRIP Magazine fans waiting for the arrival of our print edition – victim of the craziest combination of circumtsances yet in terms of getting it in to the UK – may be interested to know that Issue 5 for iPad is being worked on now by ROK Comics and should be submited to Apple sometime next week.

The price of all back issues of STRIP Magazine for iPad has also just been dropped to £1.99 per issue.

We decided to delay submission of STRIP Issue 5 to Apple in view of the distribution issues for the print edition, but with changes to our plans for the relaunch - moved to September - that have superceded some copy in the print edition, the digital STRIP Issue 5 (which will also be priced at £1.99) will include updated pages from the 'real world' magazine, as well as some trailer imagery for the new-look to the title.

The iPad edition will have less pages than the print verison of Issue 5 but some exclusive trailer images from the revamp, and we have also updated 'Comic Cuts' to reflect the change of launch plans.

The big news on the digital front is that by way of an experiment, we'll be publishing a digital only version of STRIP in July. This special Issue 6 will wrap some storylines that complete in the print 'bumper' version of Issue 5, as well as again trailing the new look STRIP.

Strip Magazine to re-launch in September

Strip Magazine Issue 1 Volume 2Print Media Productions has reluctantly decided to delay its planned news stand launch of STRIP from June until September 2012.

The decision follows discussion with our news stand distributors who suggested that the autumn would be a far better time for the new incarnation to hit the newsagents.

"There are also vital issues that need to be sorted out, especially a guaranteed delivery cycle from Print Media in Bosnia" editor John Freeman commented. "Both myself and Mike Conroy, who is advising us on administration matters, discussed the situation with publisher Ivo Milicevic, who has bankrolled the project so far, and agreed the logistics of getting the first issue of the new incarnation printed and into the shops for our planned launch date were simply insurmountable at this time."

Once STRIP Issue 5 - a giant-sized issue - is released in comic shops in the UK next month (again, later than planned), STRIP will take a summer break.

While you're waiting. check out this great cover for the new look magazine by Bernhard Kolle.

Bernhard hails from Croatia but lives and works n Lubljana, Slovenia. He began his career drawing horror comics for the American market and drew the comic books Conny and Gespenster Geschichten between 1988 and 1996 for Germany's Bastei Verlag. Between 1996 and 1999 he was back drawing horror stories for Dark Horse titles like Ghost in the US before returning to Bastei and Gespenster Geschichten to draw Maddrax and Vampira.

As well as covers for STRIP, he's working on an action adventure story for the title.

Hookjaw's deadly quest - rooted in reality?

White Sharks by Dirk Schmidt
There are few species that strike such fear into humans as the Great White shark as any fan of Hookjaw, which features in STRIP Magazine knows.

And yet this fearsome predator is also greatly threatened by human activity. Moreover, its seemingly random attacks can be shown to follow quite definite and understandable patterns of behaviour.

Based on years of observing and studying Great Whites, White Sharks, a recently-released book by Dirk Schmidt, is a fascinating original contribution towards understanding the behaviour and habits of this much-feared and greatly misunderstood species (not helped by Hookjaw's fictional antics, we're sure!)

Illustrated throughout with magnificent images of White sharks, often in spectacular aerial breaches, this book is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about the health of our marine environment and understanding White shark behaviour. The book is available now from all good bookshops. ISBN: 9781920289508 Price: £28.99

All Change for Black Ops Extreme

Black Ops Extreme: History Man
by Richmond Clements and Stephen Downey
Black Ops Extreme © Print Media Productions
Print Media Productions is pleased to announce that artist Stephen Downey has taken up the reins on Black Ops Extreme for STRIP - The Comic Magazine on a regular basis.

Stephen's run on BOX, taking over from PJ Holden (currently busy with Monsterology for Renegade), begins with the first newsstand issue of the title.

Stephen has already drawn two upcoming episodes, both written by new writer Richmond Clements, who has taken over the scripting of the story from John Freeman.

"We're delighted to have Stephen's continuing on Black Ops Extreme," commented editor John. "PJ set a really high standard with his work on the strip, but Stephen's clearly up to the challenge of following in his brush strokes.

"I came up with an overall 'arc' for BOX for the first 12 issues of the magazine, which Richmond is polishing up nicely, but his first two stories are more 'one shots', to draw new readers in as we relaunch the title.

"The 'arc' will resume with the third issue of the newsstand edition, which also sees the arrival of WarWorldz by Iron Moon writer Stephen Walsh and Giancarlo Caracuzzo."

Belfast-based artist and game maker Stephen Downey has worked with Insomnia Publications, Titan Publishing, AAM/Markosia, Heske Horror, Comic a Gael and Beserker to bring his comics and artwork to the masses. He is the co-creator of Cancertown and Slaughterman's Creed, both with Cy Dethan and has worked on the Torchwood comic strip for Titan Magazines.

Most recently, he's been busy with the historical mystery adventure Jennifer Wilde, an original three-part comic book series published by Ireland's Atomic Diner, from a story by Robert Curley and Maura McHugh, with a script by Maura McHugh. Stephen provides art, lettering and covers.

Richmond Clements, from Larne, County Antrim, is a writer, editor and colourist for the small press publisher FutureQuake Press. He has also written Wild West Wendy, a supernatural western drawn by Vicky Stonebridge, and Turning Tiger, a two-part science fiction comic drawn by Alex Moore, for Renegade Arts Entertainment.

Richmond is also writing Operation Inferno for STRIP - The Comic Magazine,  drawn by Nick Dyer, a steampunck action adventure starring the ninja secret agent Ryuu who debuted in STRIP – The Comic Magazine Issue 3.

Andrew Wildman set to sign 'Frontier' at Orbital Comics event

May 5th is the annual Free Comic Book Day and many comic creators are banding together not only to promote their books but also support charities.

Simon Furman, Andrew Wildman (co-creator of our weird western album, Frontier), Stephen Baskerville, Jason Cardy and JP Bove, the Transformers ReGeneration One team will be signing at Orbital Comics in Great Newport Street, London on the day, where you'll be able to get your free copy of the comic, get it signed and make a donation to trasnform the life of a child less fortunate than yourself.

Copies of Frontier will also be on sale at Orbital Comics on the day.

All proceeds from this upcoming event will be going to Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, the leading wishgranting charity that grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening conditions.

Draw the World Together recently teamed up with Make-A-Wish Foundation and addition to the usual Ê»Sketch for Donationsʼ model that Draw the World Together have successfully used over the past few years they are now creating the possibility of having all signatures at signing events in the UK raise a minimum of £1 per signature in aid of charity.

"Comic Book creative teams generally do not charge for signatures and it seems like the perfect opportunity for comic book fans and readers to express their support for those children who do not have the opportunities that many of us take for granted," explained DwT's Andrew Wildman. "This simple exchange between the professionals of the comic book world and their fans will help fund the amazing work undertaken by Make-A-Wish."

The Oribital Comics even, coinciding with Free Comic Book Day, will be the first event to implement this sceheme, but Andrew is hoping other comic creators will take up the challenge to raise money.

This double issue will only count as a single issue as far as subscribers are concerned to thank them for their loyalty.

Back issues of STRIP Magazine will also soon be offered via our web site if you have missed an edition.

You can also get STRIP Magazine digitally on iTunes for iPad.

Print Media Productions is pleased to announce that Stephen Downey will be joining the STRIP - The Comic Magazine creative team as a guest artist on two upcoming episodes of Black Ops Extreme.

"We're delighted to have Stephen on board," commented editor John Freeman. "He's someone I've wanted on this project for some time now and I'm hoping it won't be to long before we've got him a regular strip.

"I've been a fan of the indie title Futurequake for ages, so it's great to get Richmond on board, too. Several people have been pushing for us to bring on creators on board who have been busy in Britain's indie press and we're in total agreement with them. Our STRIP Challenge - which we'll be re-running - brought some great talent to light."

PJ Holden features in new comics documentary, The Invisible Artist?

The comic booklet: once a mass market media form, some would argue it has all but disappeared from newsagents shelves in the last 20 years - but comic creation continues apace across the UK, including Northern Ireland.

A new film released via Vimeo online, featuring comic artists such as STRIP Magazine artist PJ Holden, explores the hidden heritage of Belfast-centric cartooning that goes back centuries.

More recently, the vibrant underground publishing scene there, from The Belfast People's Comic (1977) to Patrick Brown's The Cattle Raid of Cooley (2011), has begun to attract attention from establishment arts bodies. The Invisible Artist look at the stories of committed creators in this black sheep media and how they have informed our contemporary culture.

The Invisible Artist was written by Andrew Luke and filmed and edited by Carl Boyle of Greater Belfast community group Northern Visions TV. Once a training ground for Channel 4 film-makers, NVTV is free-to-view, and hosts its programmes on Channel 62/799.276MHz in Belfast, with a weekly and omnibus edition, before joining the archive screenings looped rotation.

Shows also appear online in the months after airing. NVTV are hoping to raise their broadcasts to appear on Freeview next year. This film was originally screened on 7 November at 4:30pm, and again on 12th, at approximately 12:30.

"I'm indebted to Carl Boyle for stepping in to cover the editing and production when my workload became too heavy to cope," says Andrew of the production. "The documentary was shot in a short space of time in early 2011 and captures the vibrancy of the time.

"In many ways, The Invisible Artist? is also the story of Davy Francis, a man at the crossroads of four decades of comics creation in Belfast. I'd like to thank Carl, Davy, Paddy Brown, PJ Holden (who called by at the last minute to help out), and everyone who gave their time to make this film happen."

Ride the Weird Frontier with Print Media's latest graphic novel

We're pleased to announce the publication of the much-praised graphic novel Frontier: Dealing with Demons, an all-ages 'Weird Western' by Jason Cobley and Andrew Wildman.

The Wild West... and Daisy Adams is suddenly all alone, living on the plains, left with her father's old coat and a catapult. Then Mitch Seeker, the son of a sheriff, runs into her life. And they've been running ever since, chasing werewolves, ghosts and demons, on a quest to track down the man who turned them both into orphans and unleashed weirdness into the Wild West.

In 1866, out on the Frontier, things got Weird. History failed to record everything that happened, but Daisy wrote it all down in her diaries.

In Frontier, we follow Mitch and Daisy as they seek justice but end up finding more adventure and danger than they counted on. It's weird. It's wild. It happened out west!

First published in the acclaimed Random House weekly comic The DFC, Print Media Productions is delighted to bring you this collection of Britain's weirdest western comic – Frontier. Weaving an engaging, adventure-filled tale of derring-do in the American West, this collected edition of Frontier: Dealing with Demons from Jason Cobley and Andrew Wildman includes additional feature material, including pages from Daisy's secret diary and reveals just how the story was created.

"Cobley and Wildman put the 'Wild' into the Wild West with Frontier," says the BBC's David Gilyeat of this story. "Imagine True Grit spun out into an ongoing action adventure serial, with a weird and wonderful script and sprightly, dynamic artwork. Oh, and with really cool monsters."

"A great comic needs three things: dynamic art, original and thrillingly-paced storylines, and characters we can root for," enthuses Dave Morris, creator of Mirabilis, also published by Print Media. "The team of Jason Cobley and Andrew Wildman are unsurpassed on all counts, and Frontier shows them at the top of their game. Put it on your Wanted poster right now."

Frontier – now being considered as a possible TV series with a trailer shot earlier this year -- will appeal to anyone who's ever enjoyed a cowboy film or comic, but has an added fantasy element that will draw in plenty more readers. With great characters, werewolves, ancient gods and demons and a bad guy that bullets can't kill, there's plenty to enjoy!

Writer Jason Cobley (Interviewed in STRIP Magazine Issue 3, on sale now in all good UK comic shops and for iPad) has adapted Dracula, Frankenstein and An Inspector Calls as graphic novels, working with artists Staz Johnson, Declan Shalvey and Will Volley to bring the classics to new life.

As well as working as a teacher for almost two decades, he has written the adventures of Captain Winston Bulldog for almost as long, with a variety of UK comic artists including Neill Cameron, most notably in the epic Bulldog: Empire. Based in East Anglia, holding back the sea with just a dustbin lid and some twine, Jason is currently working on a children's fantasy adventure novel The Legend of Tom Hickathrift, due out from Mogzilla later in 2012.

Frontier artist Andrew Wildman is an illustrator of some 25 years industry experience. His work has been used in advertising and publishing but it is for his work in the field of comics that he is best known, illustrating for books such as Transformers, The X-Men, Spider-Man and Venom. Further work includes character and environment design as well as storyboarding and animated movie production for the Video Games industries on projects such as Wing Commander, The Mummy, Gunlok, Jesse James: Gunfighter, Delta Force and Dredd versus Death.

Andrew was also Head Character Designer for the animated TV shows Legend of The Dragon and Zorro: Generation Z, Production Designer on the children’s animated TV show The Matt Hatter Chronicles and storyboard artist for the BBC on The Fades and Doctor Who.

He's currently collaborating again with Simon Furman on the eagerly anticipated Transformers comic book series, Transformers: ReGeneration One and is also creating a Children’s TV series with Bob the Builder scriptwriter Simon Jowett and developing his own Graphic Novel, HORIZON.
